Mirath (Inheritance)

Islamic law on inheritance (mirath), based on the Qur'an, requires that Muslim women receive specifically regulated inheritance shares and permits inheritance to pass through the femle line. The Qur'an contains more extensive and specific rules on inheritance than on any other subject, although Sunni and Shii law diverge on interpretations and applications of these rules. Sunni inheritance law holds that the Qur'an reformed the existing system of inheritance in western Arabia under which males inherited and Sunnis reconcile the Qur'anic injunctions for fixed inheritance portions with the claims of the male relatives.
