Muslims practice their faith in many different ways, but the major practices are summarised as the Five Pillars, which include: the profession of faith, namely that there is only one God and that Muhammed is the Messenger of God - which determines the community a Muslim will live in;
- establishing the prayer and the institutions and rights that are associated with it;
- the payment and distribution of an annual "divine tax" known as zakat, around 2.5% of one's excess wealth;
- fasting (abstention from food, drink and sex) during daylight hours in the month of Ramadan;
- and the pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime, if one is able, which includes the organisation of all aspects of this collective event.

A Muslims is expected to live his life as an activist, emulating the Prophet Muhammed, who sought social changes to alleviate injustice, ignorance, malpractices and poverty.
