The First Gulf War began in 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait. The invasion was met with condemnation and a US led coalition to remove Iraq from Kuwait. Saudi Arabia, as a neighboring country and a member of the coalition, played a significant role in the war effort.

In this context, Bin Baz argued the alliance with the US was necessary for the defense and protection of Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states from the aggression of Iraq despite the fact there was no such threat. He cited Islamic principles such as the duty to defend oneself and one's community from harm, as well as the principle of seeking help from others when necessary.

He also argued the alliance with the US was in line with the principle of "al-wala' wal-bara" which encourages Muslims to support and be loyal to their Muslim brothers and sisters, and to dissociate themselves from non-Muslims who are hostile to them.

Another reason why Bin Baz argued Islam permitted Saudi Arabia to ally with the US was the fact the coalition was not only led by the US but also had the participation of other Arab and Muslim countries -primarily US client states. This made the coalition more acceptable to the religious leaders and population as it was not seen as only an alliance with the West against a Muslim country.

Additionally, Bin Baz also pointed out the coalition's goal was not to conquer or occupy Iraq but to restore the sovereignty of Kuwait and to force Iraq to withdraw from Kuwaiti territory. He argued this goal was in line with Islamic principles of justice and the defense of the rights of others.

Conclusion

Bin Baz's statement that Islam permitted Saudi Arabia to ally with the US against Iraq in the First Gulf War was based on a number of political considerations where Islamic principles were twisted to endorse.
