Dictionaries are typically aimed at the layperson - I've yet to see a serious academic rely on them aside from an introduction to a word.
If you want a serious discussion, the dictionary definitions need to be looked at, how they arrived at them, how valid are they etc so a more nuanced and deeper understanding develops.
