When were hadith written down and recorded?

Hadith were written by some companions during the life of the Prophet (saw). The process grew after his death.

  • Abu Huraira (ra) had at least nine students who wrote down Hadith from him.
  • Ibn Umar (ra) had eight students who wrote down Hadith from him.
  • Anas ibn Malik (ra) had 16 different students who wrote down Hadith from him.
  • A’isha (ra) had three students at least who wrote down Hadith from her, including Urwah Ibn Abbas (ra) who had 9 students who had wrote down Hadith from him.
  • Jabir bin Abdullah had at least 14 students who wrote down Hadith.

I could continue but I believe this illustrates the point.
