A Common Fallacy: Don't judge... Allah forgives whomsoever he pleases.

In the scheme of life that would be arbitrary and unjust as it is hardly fair to sinners sent to hell if others like them get sent to paradise, and likewise with those who strove to make paradise whilst others gained it without any effort.

So just as no judge can let off any criminal however he wishes, adhering to a predetermined schema, Allah is The Judge, and does not forgive in some arbitrary fashion, instead adhering to a predetermined schema embedded in revelation - the sharia spelling out what is expected of us in terms of duties, rights, recommendations, prohibitions and so on.

For clarity, Allah is able to do that and anything he wishes - that is not in dispute. What is being said is Allah has created life as a test to separate us out and to award just deserts... To do this Allah has told us what is expected of us, how he will judge and how he will restrict himself to perfect justice on the day of judgment and spells it out repeatedly in the Quran and Sunnah in no unclear terms.

"And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful. But those whose balance is light, will be those who have lost their souls, in Hell will they abide." (Qur'an 23:102-103)

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

"The first action for which a servant of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayers. If they are in order, he will have prospered and succeeded. If they are lacking, he will have failed and lost. If there is something defective in his obligatory prayers, then the Almighty Lord will say: See if my servant has any voluntary prayers that can complete what is insufficient in his obligatory prayers. The rest of his deeds will be judged the same way." (Tirmidhi 413)
