In a nutshell:the punishment and benefit received in the grave are attested to both in the texts and in the consensus of the umma. In principle, the punishment and benefit in question apply to the soul. It may happen that the soul re-enters the body and makes the body feel one or the other.

TOPIC

Firstly

As for the examination of accounts, it will not take place in the grave. Everything that takes place there is limited to a punishment against a part of the work of the chastened or a benefit to a dead person from the people of good. The examination of the accounts, strictly speaking, will not take place until the Day of Resurrection.

Secondly

In principle, everyone is subject to scrutiny on the Resurrection floor, except for one category of people who, by divine grace, will enter Paradise without scrutiny or punishment.

At-Tirmidhi (3357) reported that Abu Hurairah said: "When the verse was revealed: 'You will certainly be asked about the benefits. the people said:

- "Messenger of Allah, of what blessings shall we be questioned? Of the two black commodities (water and dates that we consume) surrounded by enemies whose swords are drawn?

- "It will happen as foretold," al-Albani has stated correctly in Sahihi at-Tirmidhi.

Ibn Kathir (May Allah have mercy on him) has said in his explanation of this verse: that is, you will then be asked about the expression of your gratitude for the blessings you have been given in terms of health, security, sustenance and the like in order to find out whether you have shown gratitude and devotion to Him. From Ibn Kathir's Tafsir (8/474).

At-Tirmidhi (2417) reported from Abu Barzah al-Aslami (P.A.a) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

"The two feet of a faithful servant of Allah will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about how he conducted his life; how he acquired and spent his wealth and how he used his body." (Verified by the reporter and deemed authentic by al-Alani in Sahihi at-Tirmidhi.

Ibn al-Qayyim (May Allah have mercy on him) said: "According to Qatada, Allah will question every worshipper about the deposit that He has entrusted to him in terms of benefits and the rights that they call for.

The blessings to be questioned are of two kinds:

- what has been acquired and spent lawfully. Here, the questions will focus on the expression of gratitude that they should elicit.

- what has not been acquired and spent lawfully. There, the questions will be about the source and the areas of use. From Ighathatu Lahfan (1/84).

Ibn al-Qayyim continues: "Everyone will be asked about the benefits he has enjoyed in this world, whether he acquired them lawfully and how he used them? If he succeeds in answering this question, he will be asked another question, namely: has he shown gratitude to Allah Most High by using his wealth in His obedience or not? The first question is about the source and the second about the area of use." From Uddatu as-Saabiriin, p. 157.

Third

The examination of the eschatological accounts takes two forms. The first is an exposition of the facts. This form is reserved for the believers; he will be asked about his work, his knowledge and the benefits that Allah has bestowed upon him. The respondent will give an answer that is well-informed, irrefutable and capable of sustaining the benefits that Allah has bestowed upon him. When his sins are exposed to him, he will acknowledge them, and Allah will conceal them and forgive them. He will not be subjected to a rigorous examination of accounts. He will receive his register by the right hand and will go home happy for having escaped the punishment and obtained the reward.

Al-Bokhari (6536) and Muslim (28776) reported from Aisha that the Prophet (PBUH) said: "Anyone who undergoes a close examination of account will be punished.

-Didn't Allah say, "He will be subjected to an easy test of accounts.

- "This is the exposition of the facts."

Al-Hafez (May Allah have mercy on him) says: "For al-Quribi, the meaning of the expression 'this is the exposure of the facts' is that the examination of accounts mentioned in the verse is to show the believer his or her deeds so as to make him or her aware of the divine grace of their concealment in this world and their forgiveness in the Hereafter.

Ahmad (24988) reported that Aisha said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) in these words:

- "What is the easy test of accounts?

- "it consists in showing a man his sins before forgiving him. for whoever undergoes a close examination of account will be punished." (Deemed authentic by al-Albani in Zhilal al-Djanna (2/128).

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin (May Allah have mercy on him) says: "The believer will undergo an examination of accounts which will not be rigorous because the Prophet (PBUH) said: "Whoever undergoes a strict examination of accounts will be punished or destroyed. Also it will be an exposition of the facts." From al-liqaa ach-shahri (1/378).

Al-Bokhari (2661) and Muslim (2768) reported that Ibn Omar (p.a.a) heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say, "Surely Allah will bring the believer closer to Himself and cover him and say to him:

-"Do you recognise such and such a sin?

- "Of course, Lord."

When he has recognized his sins and considers himself lost, Allah will say to him:

-I had concealed them in the lower world and forgive you them today." He will then be given the record of his good deeds.

As for the disbeliever and the hypocrite, the witnesses (angels) will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord. May the curse of Allah (strike) the unjust."

The second kind consists of a rigorous examination of account. It concerns the disbelievers and those whom Allah will want to treat in this way among the followers of the absolute oneness of Allah guilty of rebellion. The examination of their accounts will be long and difficult because of the magnitude of their sins. These rebels, though followers of the faith in absolute oneness, will be sent to hell for a temporary stay according to the will of Allah applied to a part of them. These will be taken out of hell to be welcomed permanently in paradise.

Muslim (2968) reported that Abu Hurairah said: "They (the companions) said:

-Messenger of Allah! Will we see our Master on the Day of Resurrection?"

- "Do you jostle each other so that you can see a sun at its zenith in a clear sky?"

- "No."

- "Do you need to jostle to see the full moon in a cloudless sky?"

- "No."

- "For the sake of Him Who holds my soul in His hand, you will not have to jostle to see your Master as you do not need to for the sun or the moon...When He (Allah) meets the faithful, He will say to him:

- "Have I not honoured you, raised your rank, given you a wife, subdued horses and camels and let you settle down and rule?"

- "Yes, Lord."

- "Did you think you would meet Me?

- "No."

- "I will forget you as you had forgotten Me."

He (Allah) will receive another devotee and say to him:

- "Did I not honour you, raise your rank, give you a wife, subdue horses and camels and let you settle down and rule?"

- "Yes, Lord."

- "Did you think you would meet Me?

- "No."

-I will forget you as you have forgotten me.

Then He will meet a third and tell him the same thing. He (the faithful) will say:

-"O Master, I have believed in Thee, in Thy Book and in Thy messengers. I have prayed, fasted and given alms." And he will say as many good deeds as he can."

- "He (Allah) will say: this is it (that will benefit you)."

Then it will be said to him, 'Now We will send you our witness. The worshipper will think and ask himself, "Who shall I send to testify against him? They will close his mouth and command his thigh, flesh and bones to speak: "His thigh, flesh and bones will reveal his deeds in the hope that he will be excused. This is what will happen to the hypocrite who has incurred the wrath of Allah.

To conclude
Shaykh ibn Uthaymin (May Allah have mercy on him) wrote: "There is a difference of opinion among the Ulama (May Allah have mercy on them) as to the meaning of the divine saying: "Then you will be questioned about the blessings" as to whether the questioning will be of the disbeliever only or of the believer as well? The right thing is that both will be subjected to it. But the disbeliever will be questioned with the intention of making him feel bad and the believer as a reminder.

It is to remind him of the blessings he has received from Allah the Exalted in Might and the Mighty, so that he may be filled with joy and know that the One who bestowed them on him in this life is the One who will fill the believers with His Grace in the Hereafter. As for the disbeliever, the question will be addressed to him to trouble his conscience." Short extract from liqaa al-bab al-maftouh (9/98).
