The first mosque is generally considered to be the Masjid al-Haram (The Sacred Mosque) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This mosque is one of the holiest sites in Islam and is considered the birthplace of the religion. It is believed to have been built by the prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael, and it is the site where Muslims from all over the world come to perform the pilgrimage known as the Hajj. The Masjid al-Haram is also the location of the Kaaba, a cuboid-shaped building that is considered the most sacred site in Islam. Muslims around the world face the direction of the Kaaba when they pray.
