In a Nutshell:
Ammar (ra) approached the Prophet (saw) in Dar al-Arqam and asked him about Islam and converted. He was one of the very early men who accepted Islam in the very first months.

Background

At the beginning of Islam, the Prophet (saw) used to proactively approach the influential and elites of society who could more readily ensure a transition for all of their followers. Where individuals approached him, he responded to them, answered their questions and spent time teaching them and helping them build their personalities.

Ammar's Story of Conversion

Amar ibn Yassir (ra) was one of those who approached the Prophet (saw) asking him about his new faith. It is probably his father or mother, who converted before him informed him of Islam, told him the Prophet (saw) sits in the house of al-Arqam.

It was narrated Ammar (ra) met another one, in front of the house, wants also to meet the Prophet (saw); namely Suhayb ibn Sinan (ra). They then entered the house and asked the Prophet (saw) about Islam and then converted to Islam.

Ammar narrated:

لقيت صهيبا على باب دار الأرقم وفيها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، فدخلنا، فعرض علينا الإسلام فأسلمنا
"I met Suhayb in front of the door of Dar al-Arqam and the Prophet (saw) was there. We entered and he presented Islam to us, so we embraced Islam." (Dhahabi, Siyar A'lam an-Nubalaa, Vol. 3, p. 350)

Ammar also narrated he was ninth Muslim. He narrated:

"I saw Allah's Messenger (saw) and there was none with him but five slaves, two women and Abu Bakr (i.e. those were the only converts to Islam then)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3660, 3857)

Ibn Jajar suggested he did not know the rest of converts in the early times, so he may have not seen Ali (ra), but he is certainly one of the early companions who converted in the first months. (Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Vol. 7, p. 84, Al-Kurani, al-Kawthar al-Jari, Vol. 7, p. 156)

He may also have mentioned only mentioned the men not the adults because he did not mention al-Arqam whom the Prophet (saw) sits in his house.

As the fifth century muhadith ibn Hubayrah Shaybani said:

في هذا الحديث ما يدل على قدم إسلام عمار.
"This hadith proves Ammar became a Muslim early." (Ibn Hubayrah Shaybani, al-Ifsah 'An Ma'ani as-Sihah, Vol. 2 , p. 137)

Ibn Hajar mentioned the names of these women and slaves, he said:

هم بِلَالٌ وَزَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ وَعَامِرُ بْنُ فُهَيْرَةَ وَأَبُو فكيهة وياسر وَالِد عمار والمرأتان خَدِيجَة وَسُميَّة وَالِدَة عمار أَو أم أَيمن
"They are Bilal, Zayd ibn Harithah, 'Amir ibn Fuhayrah, Abu Fakihah and Yassir the father of Ammar.
The two women are Khadijah and Sumayah, the mother of Ammar, or Umm Ayman." (Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Vol. 1, p. 300)

Others added 'Ubayd ibn Zayd al-Habashi. (Siniki, Minhat al-Bari, Vol. 7, p. 17)

Conclusion

Ammar (ra) approached the Prophet (saw) in Dar al-Arqam and asked him about Islam and converted. He was one of the very early men who accepted Islam in the very first months.
