Is the Hajj and Eid al-Adha connected?

Eid al-Adha and Hajj are commonly thought to be connected given their proximity in the Islamic calender.  However the two are not connected. Eid al-Adha was celebrated by the Prophet (saw) and his companions in the second year of hijra in Medina.  Hajj however was ordained and obliged in the 9th year of hijra.  Those performing hajj are not expected to celebrate Eid al-Adha - all other Muslims however are expected to do so.
