Where should heaven and hell be located? Some people say that hell is in the earth...Is that right?

Intoduction

Praise be to Allah.

The Ulama have stated that paradise is in the seventh heaven and hell is in the lower layer of the earth. Al-Bokhari (7423) reported from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (PBUH) said, "When you invoke Allah, ask Him for access to the Ferdows which is the centre and upper part of paradise and above which is the Throne of the Clement."

Topic
Al-Bayhaqui reported in al-Baath wa an-nushur (455) through a weak chain of reporters that Ibn Massoud said, "Paradise is in the 7th heaven, the highest and that hell is in the 7th layer of the earth, the lowest." Then he recited: "Let them beware! The book of the good will be in the `Illiyyun (Qur'an, 83:18) and: No...! But verily the book of the libertines will be in the Sijjîn (Qur'an,83:7) Al- Bayhaqui adds: The hadith of Baraa ibn Azib and Abu Hurairah about the punishment in the grave and what both of them reported from the Prophet (PBUH) about the position of the respective souls of the believer and the disbeliever indicate what has just been said.

Al-Hakim (8698) reported from Abdullah ibn Salam that paradise is in heaven and hell is in the earth (Deemed authentic by al-Hakim followed by al-Dhahabi).

Al-Hafidz Ibn Rajab (May Allah have mercy on him) said, "Atiya reported from Ibn Abbas that paradise is in the 7th heaven and Gehenna is in the 7th layer of the earth." Quoted by Abu Nouaym.

Ibn Mandah quoted a hadith that Yahya al-Qattat received from Mujahid who said to Ibn Abbas:

-Where is paradise?

- "in the 7th heaven."

- and hell?

-under seven superimposed mothers.

Ibn Abi Dunayaa reported through his chain of reporters after Qatada that they (the pious forefathers) said that paradise was in the seven heavens and Gehenna in the seven layers of the earth. Some people find an argument for this in the fact that Allah Most High has informed us that the disbelievers will be exposed to hell morning and night and that the gates of heaven will not be opened for them. He means what happens during the transitional period (between death and resurrection). This means that hell is in the earth." From at-Takhwiif min an-naar (p.62-63).

Ibn Uthaymin (May Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Where is Paradise and Hell? This is his answer: "Paradise is at the highest level and Hell is at the sijjiin at the lowest level of the earth according to this hadith: "When a man is dying, Allah Most High says: Transfer the record of my faithful servant to the sijjiin, in the lowest layer of the earth. As for paradise, it is at the highest height. It is reliably reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the throne of the Majestic and Most High Master is the ceiling of the Ferdows Paradise." From fatwas nouroun alaa ad-darb (4/2) according to the numbering of the shamila.

The same sheikh also says: "Hell is placed in the earth. Some ulama say that it is in the mothers. Others say that it is in the bowels of the earth. It seems that it is in the earth, but we do not know precisely at what level. The argument for the existence of hell in the earth lies in the words of Allah Most High: "No...! But verily the book of the libertines will be in the Sijjîn (Qur'an, 83:7).

Since sijjiin refers to the lowest layer of the earth, it necessarily houses hell.

Conclusion
Hadiths were reported on this but they are weak. Traditions have been brought from the pious forefathers such as Ibn Abbas and Ibn Massoud which correspond to the apparent meaning of the Qur'an for Allah Most High says: For those who treat Our teachings as false and turn away from them in pride, the gates of heaven will not be opened to them, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel enters the eye of the needle. Thus do We recompense the criminals. (Qur'an,7:40) Those who call the teachings false and turn away from them out of pride will inevitably go to hell.

Allah knows best.
