Fitra is the innate consciousness of morality, that is present in every human being and has been elaborated in Sura al-Araaf. This is a capacity for morality, not the specific moral codes.

Practically, the fitrah of mankind is the internal desire to be morally upright, not the knowledge of its particulars. This last clause: "not the knowledge of its particulars," addresses three potential problems:

  • Legal particulars have changed over time as seen with previous Prophets and their differing laws.
  • Excluding knowledge of the particulars of how to be morally upright from the definition of fitrah allows for the existence of non-Muslims never reached by the message of Islam who remain true to their fitrah.
  • It is consistent with the understanding that good and evil (husn wa qubh) are not intrinsic: left to their own devices, people will differ on what is good or evil. The source of good and evil is Revelation.

The Prophets came to remind the people of the covenant they have taken with Allah (swt) and his sharia which determines morally right and wrong conduct.

Man is born upon his fitra, i.e. every child who is born innately is a moral being and accepts Allah as his Rab.

The Prophet said every child is born upon his fitra, then his parents make him Jew or Christian or Magian.

7:172 And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."

30:30 So direct your face toward the deen, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitra of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah . That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

Meaning that every person is a born Muslim and by his Fitra has the capacity to be good or bad. The environment corrupts that fitra and the Prophets come for tazkeer and tazkiyah.
