In a Nutshell: Making up missed prayers (qada') is important in Islam for maintaining a strong connection with God and fulfilling one's religious obligations.

Is it allowed to make up missed prayers?

Yes, it is allowed to make up missed prayers (salat) though there are some scholars who are of the view they cannot be made up if they were missed knowingly or intentionally.

The five daily prayers are mandatory for all Muslims who have reached the age of puberty and are physically and mentally able to perform them. If a person misses a prayer due to forgetfulness, sleep, or other reasons, they are required to make it up as soon as possible. This is known as qada' (making up) the prayer. The Qur'an says:

"And perform the prayer at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember" (Qur'an 11:114).

The Prophet (saw) also said:

"The first thing that the people will be called to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is good, then the rest of their deeds will be good. If it is evil, then the rest of their deeds will be evil" (Sahih Bukhari).

To make up a missed prayer, a person should perform the prayer as soon as possible, even if it means interrupting their daily activities. If a person misses a number of prayers, they should make them up in the order that they were missed. It is also recommended to make up missed prayers as soon as possible, even if it means praying before the next mandatory prayer.

Missed prayers should ideally be made up before the next mandatory prayer is due. If a person misses a prayer and does not make it up before the next prayer is due, then they should perform both the missed prayer and the current prayer.

Misconceptions

  • Some people may believe that making up missed prayers is not necessary or that it is only required if the missed prayer was due to a valid excuse. However, this goes against the fact that the five daily prayers are mandatory for all Muslims who have reached the age of puberty and are physically and mentally able to perform them.

  • Some people may believe that it is acceptable to postpone making up missed prayers until a later time, such as after the next mandatory prayer. However, it is recommended to make up missed prayers as soon as possible, even if it means praying before the next mandatory prayer.

  • Some scholars argue missed prayers cannot be made up if they were missed due to sin or disobedience. However, making up missed prayers is a way to repent and seek forgiveness from God, and it is never too late to start fulfilling one's religious obligations.

Conclusion

It is allowed and mandatory to make up missed prayers in Islam. This is an important part of fulfilling one's religious obligations and maintaining a strong connection with God.
