Scholars and activists are imprisoned generally for speaking against the interests of the ruling classes.  Dr. Hassan Farhan al-Maliki is one such example out of many outspoken Muslim Saudi Scholars. He was a professor of Islamic law, a strict Salafi and very conservative Wahhabi. Years of research on hadith, Sunna books and Islamic history, he become an incredible voice of reason and moderation. He has been in Saudi prison for around 2 years now, his crime was trying to promote tolerance between Sunnis and Shi'as. Today his son was sentenced to 4 years in jail for helping his father.
