The term al-amanah in Arabic generally refers to "honesty", derived from the term "al-amn" which refers to someone who feels secure from the violation of his rights. While the opposite al-khiyanah is taken from the word al-khawn (deficiency), which refers to the betraying of another.
The following Qur'anic verse speaks of the rejection of the amanah given by Allah offered to the heavens, earth and mountains as they feared khiyanah (treachery) leading to punishment:
Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant. (Qur'an 33:72)
Imam al-Qurtubi’s opinion, also the opinion of jumhur of the ulama (majority of scholars), is amanah encompasses all aspects of wazaif al-din (beliefs and duties) without which iman (faith) is incomplete. This is because al-amanah was also derived from the word al-iman. Therefore, whoever preserves the amanah granted by Allah, he will have is iman preserved.
