In a Nutshell: Fasting is an important practice in Islam. Only Allah knows the magnitude of the reward reserved for the one sincerely fasting.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
All the work of the son of Adam (the human) belongs to him except for fasting which belongs to Me and whose reward I provide. (Sahih al-Bukhari,1904; Muslim,1151)

Topic
Fasting in Ramadan is one of the pillars of the deen. The Muslim must be careful to observe it and take the necessary precautions; whether it is compulsory fasting or fasting that is deemed to be superogatory, so that Allah will give him the best reward.

There are many recommendations for the fasting person.

I will mention the following:

Firstly, if someone insults him or attacks him, let him oppose him with good treatment and say: I am observing the fast.

Secondly, the fasting person is recommended to eat the dawn meal as it is a source of blessing.

Thirdly, he is recommended to delay eating the said meal and to hasten, when the time comes, to break his fast.

Fourthly, he should eat fresh dates at the time of breaking the fast. If he cannot find any, he should replace them with water.

Fifthly, it is recommended he say at the time of breaking his fast:

The thirst has subsided and the veins have been refreshed and the reward due, if it pleases Allah.

Sixthly, the fasting person is recommended to have frequent recourse to invocation in view of the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

The invocations uttered by three persons will never go unanswered: the righteous imam (leader), the fasting person who has arrived at the time of breaking the fast, and the victim of injustice. (Reported by Ahmad, 8043)

and declared authentic by the revisers of the Musnad due to the concordance of the ways and testimonies.

The Shafii jurist An-Nawawi (May Allah have mercy on him) said:

It is recommended the fasting person invokes Allah to ask Him for the achievement of important things in this world and in the Hereafter for his benefit and for the benefit of Muslims. From al-Majmu' (6/375).

Seventhly, it is recommended the person observing the Ramadan fast
- Sit in the mosques to recite the Qur'an and remember Allah;
-The last ten nights of Ramadan should be spent in pious retreat;
-Performing supererogatory night prayers;
- Multiplying alms and acts of charity;
- revising the Qur'an. Bukhari and Muslim reported from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) was the most generous man and he was most generous during Ramadan when he met Gabriel. This meeting took place every night and the purpose was to review the Qur'an together.

Conclusion
One should not waste time on unnecessary activities that may affect or devalue the fast such as sleeping for long periods of time, frequent jokes and the like, and should not be overly concerned with the diversification of food and drink as this prevents the fasting person from performing some of the good deeds that should accompany fasting.

Allah Most High knows best.
