In a Nutshell: Islamic education is an important practice for Muslim parents to transmit the values and principles of Islam to their children.

It is obvious there is a gap between knowledge and practice; between knowledge and its application in the perception of common people and individuals. This leads some to believe education is limited to theoretical knowledge and that it is a matter of stuffing children with all kinds of knowledge and texts. The one who fears Allah however is the holder of true knowledge which is well comprehended:

"Among His servants only the learned fear Allah." (Quran 35:28)

Ibn Taymiyyah alluded to this verse which, like others, is misinterpreted as valuing knowledge and learning separately from practice and education. This interpretation results from a division of the verse that isolates its end from its beginning. Indeed, the word of the Most High:

"those who know and those who do not know." (Qur'an 39:9)

explains the previous verse:

"Is he who in the hours of the night remains in deviation, prostrate and upright, taking heed to the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord?"

Those who know here refer to those who stay up at night devoted to Allah from whom they fear Hell and hope for Paradise and Mercy. Those who do not know are those who do not care about this..

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim stated:

"The pious ancestors used the term fiqh only to refer to the knowledge that its holder applies. This is the true fiqh of our pious ancestors. It is the applied knowledge." (Miftahu daari Saadah 1/89)

Education in virtue and faith can only come from pious scholars who may be ulama, preachers, reformers or teachers. The practising scholar is enormously attached to the Transcendent Master through knowledge, practice and teaching.

"Become learned, obedient to the Lord, as you teach the Book and study it." (Qur'an,3:79)

Rabbani is the one who introduces the little ones to the first principles of knowledge before moving on to the adults, imitating the Transcendent Master who makes things easier.

In short, education does not consist of mere words without impact on living conditions. It is not based on empty theories unrelated to faith. Education must focus on the acquisition of a deep-rooted psychological ability to combine knowledge, gentleness, wisdom, understanding, the practice of acquired knowledge and its transmission.

The way to achieve the above can be summarised in a few brief points:

1. To make the preachers and teachers themselves aware of the realities of education and what it entails

2. To make all reformers aware of the means of spiritual education

3. Promote cooperation between reformers and leaders of (educational) institutions from the righteous and dignitaries of Muslim societies in order to establish educational institutions and to ensure the mobilisation of a group of pious educators to carry out the reform.
