Does Islam allow pursuit of wants and luxuries?

The sharia permits and encourages more than the satisfaction of basic needs. A suitable standard of living in the context of one's society, from the satiation of necessities to needs and even luxuries. 'Wants' then, within the Islamic paradigm, are encouraged within the limits of halal/haram; importantly they are not the same as nor to be confused with Western hedonistic 'wants'. There's too many evidences for this - here's a few examples: "Say: Who hath forbidden the beautiful (gifts) of Allah, which He has produced for His servants, and the things, clean and pure, for sustenance? Say: They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) purely for them on the Day of Judgment..." (7: 32) “O Children of Adam! We have bestowed clothing upon you to cover yourselves and as an adornment, and the clothing of righteousness, that is better..." (Araf: 26) “But seek, with that (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on you, the home of the hereafter, and forget not your portion of lawful enjoyment in this world...” (Qassas: 77) "Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allah, if it is indeed He Whom you serve..." (Jumaah: 172) The Prophet (saw) said: “No one will enter Paradise who has an atom’s-weight of pride in his heart.” A man said, “What if a man likes his clothes to look good and his shoes to look good?” He said, “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Pride means denying the truth and looking down on people.” (Sahih al-Muslim) The Prophet (saw) said: “The upper hand is better than the lower hand… And whoever abstains from asking others for some financial help, Allah will give him and save him from asking others, Allah will make him self-sufficient” (Sahih al-Bukhari) The Prophet (saw) asked someone wearing old clothes, “Do you have any wealth?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “What kind of wealth?” I said, “All that Allah has given me of camels and sheep.” He said, “Then show the generous blessings that He has given you.” (Ahmad, 15323; al-Tirmidhi, 1929; al-Nisaa’i, 5128) Ibn Abbas: “Eat, drink, wear clothes and give Sadaqah but with neither extravagance nor pride.” (Abu Shaybah, Al-Kitab Al-Musannaf F'il Ahadith W'al Aathar, vol. 5, p.171) Umar Bin Al-Khattab said: 'Allah has been generous to you, so be generous to yourselves.' (Abd Al-Barr, Al-Istidhkar, vol. 8, p298) Al-Bara'a related: “I never saw anyone more handsome then the Messenger of Allah, with his hair combed, wearing a red suit.” (Abd Al-Barr, Al-Istidhkar, vol. 8, p301)
