In a Nutshell: We can get rid of nightmares in Islam via du'as. What the sleeper sees in terms of things that worry him and interrupt his sleep comes from Satan. Generally speaking, the sleeper sees either a good dream that comes from Allah or an embodiment of the soul's speech i.e. ideas that occupied his intellect (before sleep) or confused images coming from Satan.

How to get rid of nightmares in Islam

According to Abu Hurairah (ra) the Prophet (saw) said:

"As time progresses, the dream of the Muslim becomes more and more true. Those of you whose dreams are truest are those whose speech is truest. The Muslim's dream is one of the 45 parts of prophecy. There are three kinds of dreams: the good dream which is good news from Allah; the dream through which Satan brings sadness, and the dream which is only a reflection of one's own thoughts" (Sahih al-Muslim, 2263).

The Prophet (saw) has told us how we can escape the influence of Satan during sleep. This is through reading verses from the Qur'an and the reported invocations before indulging in sleep.

Abu Hurairah (ra) said:

"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entrusted me with the custody of the Ramadan zakat. Then someone came to draw from the food and I seized him and said, 'I will bring your case before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)' and he said When you go to bed, recite the Throne verse. Allah will appoint someone to guard you and Satan will not approach you until morning." The Messenger of Allah (blessings and salutations be upon him) said, "He told you the truth, though a liar; it was Satan" (reported by Bukhari, 3101).

According to Abu Massoud al-Badri (ra) the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

"Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah 2 in a night, they will suffice for him" (reported by Bukhari, 3768 and Muslim, 708).

The Shafi'i jurist Al-Nawawi said:

"His words, "Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah 2 in the course of a night, they will suffice for him means, it is said, "They take the place of night prayers."

It is also said that they mean: They protect him from Satan or they protect him from faults. It may be that it is all of these at the same time (Commentary on Muslim, 62/92-93).

Aisha (ra) said:

"When the Messenger of Allah (saw) went to bed, he would recite Surahs 112, 113 and 114, blow on his palms and massage his face and whatever parts of his body they could reach with his hands. "

Aisha added: "When he fell ill, he asked me to do this for him ." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5416; Sahih al-Muslim, 2192).

Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah (saw) used to order us when we wanted to lie down to do so on our right side and to say:

"Allahouma rabb al-arsh al-azim, rabbouna wa rabbou koulli shayin, faliq al-habbi wa an-nawa, wa munzilou at-tawrati wal-injil wa al-fourqan. Aoudhou bika min sharri kouli shayin anta akhidhoun bi nasiyyatihi. Allahumma anta al awwalou fa layssa qablaka shayoun wa anta al-akhirou falayssa ba'adaka shay'oun wa anta al-batinou falayssa donnaka shayoun, iqdhi anna ad-dayna wa aghnina min al-faqr" (reported by Muslim, 2713).

"My Lord, the Master of the heavens, the earth and the immense Throne, our Master, the Master of all things, the One who splits the seed and the kernel, the Revealer of the Torah, the Gospels and the Qur'an, I ask for your protection from the evil coming from anything you hold in your hand."

Similarly, he has told us what we should do when we wake up from seeing something we do not like. It is to spit to the left and implore Allah's protection against Satan, change sides and pray if you wish.

Abu Qatada said:

"The Prophet (saw) said: The good dream comes from Allah and the bad from Satan. When one of you has a dream that frightens him, let him spit on his left and ask for divine protection from the evil that it inspires. In that case, he will not be harmed." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3118; Sahih al-Muslim, 2261).

According to Jabir (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

"When any of you sees in a dream what he hates, let him spit on his left and ask for divine protection from Satan three times and change sides." (Sahih al-Muslim, 2262).

Conclusion

We hope that practicing the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) before going to bed will keep Satan away from the person concerned.

If he applies what the Prophet (saw) has recommended in case of waking up from a nightmare, he will be free from troubles and worries. Allah knows best.
